The primary strategy provides detailed schemes of work for each year group and ensures progression in literacy skills throughout the school. Many opportunities are provided for communication through talking, listening, reading and writing. Spelling, punctuation, grammar and good handwriting are important elements in the children’s work.

Children in Key Stage 1 have a daily session of phonics. They learn through the structured phonics programme ‘Soundswrite’. All members of staff (teachers and teaching assistants) have received a week’s training in this programme.

New interactive whiteboards are proving to be useful tools in literacy teaching. Each classroom has a fiction library, and the school has a well-stocked reference library.
