Computing

Our computing Curriculum focuses on developing pupils’ digital literacy. We place a strong emphasis on developing responsible and safe use of technologies. Pupils have the opportunity to explore programming within Computer Science and improve their knowledge of  information Technology both as a discrete subject and as a tool to use across the curriculum. As a ‘Google’ school our pupils make use of Google’s Education Fundamentals as part of their learning.

Intent

Technology is part of modern-life and our pupils need to be equipped with the skills and knowledge to engage with it respectfully, safely and effectively. We want our pupils to move on from Little Gaddesden School as enlightened digital users who can confidently understand, create and utilise the technology that surrounds them now and in the future.

By using PurpleMash and Google Workspace for Education, pupils will build their knowledge of information technology through saving, retrieving and sharing information. In making use of technology, pupils will be able to positively develop their ideas and express themselves, making use of creative ways to share their learning

We expect our pupils to be conscious users of digital literacy who are able to evaluate digital content beyond discrete computing lessons. To gain understanding of how to safely access and share information; know the benefits of working collaboratively and become responsible digital citizens.

We want our pupils to understand and apply the fundamental principles of computer science including knowing how technology systems in the world around work. Through working logically, creating and debugging programs, pupils will be able to appreciate and use programming to solve problems.

Implementation

To develop confidence and responsible engagement, our pupils make use of technology from when they arrive at our school. All pupils have access to Chromebooks and ipads which are used for a range of activities for example; research, presenting work, enhancing skills, sharing knowledge.

We make use of the Purple Mash scheme of work to support planning and delivery of computing.  We have used the mixed-age planning to sequence learning as a two-year rolling programme building on prior knowledge, skills, understanding and vocabulary.

We regularly address the importance of being safe online. This includes managing passwords, sharing information, consideration when searching or sharing images.  E-safety is a focus every year as a discrete unit as well as being referenced across the computing curriculum. Our PHSE curriculum (PHSE Association) also contributes to pupils’ understanding and awareness of keeping themselves and others safe online.  We build on pupils’ prior knowledge adapting as necessary to address current issues that may become relevant. We strive to engage parents with online safety through updates in our school newsletter.

Through regular access to and use of technology, our pupils will become fluent users of digital resources across the curriculum.  We aim to embed computing across all subjects; for example utilising speech tools for recording or using a green screen to change backgrounds when promoting well-being.

Impact

We monitor impact through observing learning, pupils’ feedback and reviewing pupils’ digital skills when they are using technology. Individual progress is measured through outcomes and recorded on internal assessment files.

Pupils are able to reflect on achievements within computing and when using technology in other subjects. They demonstrate how to be respectful and safe users of digital resources, including when online.  They know how to report concerns and keep themselves and others safe online.

Through  programming skills and tools, they can create resources to solve problems or learn new skills, both independently or collaboratively. By developing key skills they improve their ability to problem solve, make use of logical thinking and self-evaluate.
