Early Years Foundation Stage

At Little Gaddesden Church of England Primary School, Class 1 provides a safe, nurturing, and stimulating environment where our youngest learners take their first steps on an exciting educational journey. Our practice is rooted in three foundational values:

• Kindness: Learning to build empathy, share, support one another, and grow within a warm C of E community.
• Endeavour: Encouraging persistence, problem-solving, and a “can-do” attitude when faced with new challenges.
• Understanding: Developing a deep curiosity about ourselves, our community, and the wider world around us.

Intent

Our Intent in EYFS is to spark wonder, foster autonomy, and build the foundational skills every child needs to flourish academically, socially, and spiritually.

• Holistic Development: We aim to meet the requirements of the Statutory Framework for the EYFS while honouring each child’s unique stage of development.
• Values in Action: We intentionally weave Kindness, Endeavour, and Understanding into everyday interactions—helping children cultivate positive relationships, show determination in their play, and grow in self-awareness and empathy.
• Foundation for Life: We strive to instil a lifelong love of learning, ensuring every child builds the communication skills, confidence, and resilience needed for a smooth transition into Key Stage 1.

Implementation

Our Implementation focuses on practical, play-based exploration combined with targeted, high-quality instruction.

• Broad & Balanced Curriculum: Learning is structured around the 7 Areas of Learning and Development:
  • Prime Areas: Communication & Language; Physical Development; Personal, Social & Emotional Development (PSED).
  • Specific Areas: Literacy; Mathematics; Understanding the World; Expressive Arts & Design.
• Enriched Learning Environment: Indoors and outdoors, our continuous provision offers hands-on opportunities where children demonstrate Endeavour through active trial, error, and discovery.
• Core Literacy & Numeracy:
  • Early reading and writing are systematically taught through the Sounds-Write phonics programme.
  • Mathematical understanding is built using concrete manipulatives and visual frameworks aligned with White Rose Maths.
• Community & Relationships: Through guided play, group story times, and shared traditions, staff model Kindness and nurture mutual Understanding among peers.

Impact

The Impact of our EYFS curriculum is seen in happy, confident, and capable children who are eager to learn.

• Ready for Key Stage 1: Children leave Reception equipped with strong foundational skills in reading, writing, and mathematics, well-prepared for the Class 2 curriculum.
• Values-Led Learners: Our pupils demonstrate genuine Kindness toward their peers, show Endeavour by persevering when learning gets tough, and display a thoughtful Understanding of their environment and community.
• Progress & Assessment: Through regular, meaningful observational assessment, we track each child’s progress against the Early Learning Goals (ELGs), celebrating individual milestones and addressing development needs early.

The revised EYFS will be operational from September 2026 and therefore relevant to all children in Class 1 from that date.

Information for Parents

We warmly welcome children into our Reception class in the September of the academic year they turn five. From their very first day, learning is an adventure—carefully crafted through a blend of playful, child-led discovery and inspiring adult-guided activities.

To ensure a smooth, confident start, our class teachers visit children in their pre-school settings during the summer term, followed by personalised home visits in September. Every Reception pupil is paired with a Buddy to guide them through school life, and is entitled to a free hot school lunch each day until the end of Year 2.
